Newport County signs youngster on pro contract

Jac Norris has signed his first professional deal with Newport County, the club is happy to announce.

The young midfield player, whose current scholarship was set to expire at the end of the following season, has signed a two-year contract with the Exiles.

The 17-year-old, who joined the squad from Cwmbran Celtic’s development programme in 2021, has advanced quickly through the academy and made his debut for the main team in April against Grimsby Town.

In the previous campaign, Norris made a total of three senior appearances for Graham Coughlan’s team and was a key member of the Under 18s’ FAW Youth Cup winning team, which advanced them to the quarterfinals.

“I’m absolutely delighted to get the deal done,” Norris stated following the deal’s signature.

“A lot of effort has been put into this, both on and off the pitch, and I’m excited for the future. “It was a little of a trip for me last season. Despite being injured for the whole preseason, I was able to regain my fitness and resume playing under-18 football.

I think I’ve grown a lot and merited a spot on the first team after spending a lot of time playing with them. “I think I’ve done well since I took the step up.”

I make an effort to be as courageous as I can, and the more seasoned peers around me have taught me a lot.

“Playing as much as I can with the first team is my ambition for the upcoming season, which will be a major one for me. I want to play and have an influence; I don’t just want to be there to pad the stats.

Luke Hussey, the academy manager, continued, “I’m ecstatic for Jac. He has put in a tonne of work to get here, and he has every chance to be a very good player.

As a team, we quickly recognised Jac as a technically good player who possesses bravery when he touches the ball.

“Since making the step-up with the first team towards the back end of the season he has shown great progress and I’m looking forward to seeing him back out on the pitch next season.”
