Reds call up Nick Martini from Triple-A

Nick Martini has been called up by the Cincinnati Reds from Triple-A Louisville. Blake Dunn, an outfielder, was optioned back to the minor levels following Wednesday night’s victory over the Cleveland Guardians. He will now be the team’s replacement.

Nick Martini had a scorching start to the season. On opening day, he drove in five runs and hit two home runs. He doubled and scored two more runs in the next game. He finished the first series with a walk, going 1-3. However, once April arrived, he shifted from being warm than the sun to being frigid than ice. He hit just.141 over the next five weeks, recording an extra-base hit of two, a walk, and 22 strikeouts while posting an OPS of just .369.

He was optioned to the minor leagues, where he joined Louisville, based on his performance. The 33-year-old had a strong offensive season while with the Bats, finishing 8-22 (.364) in his two weeks in Triple-A until the Reds called him back up in late May. He also had nine walks, a double, three home runs, and only four strikeouts. Over the course of the next two weeks, he appeared in eight games and had a respectable.258/.343/.419 line, but he was optioned back to Triple-A. In the two weeks he spent back with Louisville, he hit seven games with a.320/.357/.560 line.

He is currently back with the major league team. Cincinnati is travelling to Milwaukee for a three-game weekend series. Nick Martini will probably have plenty of chances to get into the lineup because the Brewers will be starting three right-handed pitchers in the series. Naturally, that would overlook the fact that, between Triple-A and the major leagues this season, he has actually hit better against left-handed pitchers (.839 OPS versus lefties and just a.748 OPS against righties). He’s only had 40 plate appearances against lefties and 141 against righties, so this is a small sample size.
