Duke basketball duo gets invited to NBA Draft

On the night of the NBA Draft, Jared McCain and Kyle Filipowski will be in New York City.

According to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, there will be a Duke basketball representation at next week’s NBA Draft.

Kyle Filipowski and Jared McCain have been invited to sit in the green room. Through the initial group of prospects, neither player was invited.

The Blue Devil duo’s exact position in the first round is yet unknown, but both prospects are expected to be chosen.

In the most recent Yahoo! Sports mock draft, the Miami Heat take McCain at No. 15, while Krysten Peak reports that Filipowski might miss the first round if the Boston Celtics select him at No. 30 overall. Both players seemed to be Top-20 picks during the NBA Draft process, and that may still be the case.

This is one of the weakest draft classes in recent memory, according to expert research, and teams may be more interested in prospects who fit their system well than in pure talent.

After a season in which he averaged 16.4 points and 8.3 rebounds per game, Kyle Filipowski was selected as a consensus Second Team All-American and First Team All-ACC.

After his rookie campaign, Filipowski won the ACC Rookie of the Year award.

Jared McCain’s ability to make 3-pointers—he made 41.4 percent of them previous season—made him one of the nation’s top freshmen. He made the ACC All-Rookie Team with an average of 14.3 points per game.

The most recent estimates from ESPN were released on June 11 and included both Blue Devils in the Top-20. Wednesday, June 26 at 8:00 p.m. ET on ESPN/ABC, the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn will host the first round of the NBA Draft.

The second round will be televised for the first time ever on Thursday, June 27 at 4:00 p.m. ET on ESPN from the ESPN studios in Manhattan.
